Well it has taken me a long time to get round to writing this blog. I have so many ideas for posts that I think you will find interesting so I will try get as many of them out as I can. Please explore and let me know if there is anything you want me to cover. Anxiety is such an enormous issue that affects many, many people, sometimes to the extent that life becomes very restricted. I want to explain some of the biology – the way humans notice, measure and respond to threat – so that you can see that what is happening to you is not weird or unusual. What is so difficult is that a normal response to danger has got out of hand, meaning that your body responds to quite ordinary things as if they are dangerous.
I understand how hard it can be to cope with anxiety – that you try and try to change it and nothing works. It can appear to take on a life of its own, where you have no control. This can lead to despair and can have a major impact on you and your ability to function in the world. Often it leads to difficult physical symptoms and behaviours that are distressing. You want relief and help, and may have tried different therapists before with little effect, leaving you feeling frustrated and stuck in a loop.
My way of working is to help you calm your nervous system, to acknowledge how hard it’s working to protect you, and find ways to soothe it. Nothing can change before this happens, no matter how many ‘good’ thoughts or intentions you may have. This takes time and patience, working at your pace to support you to change.
Please do drop me a line if you want to discuss your situation with me. I work online and by phone, offering options when it is hard to go out or work with someone face-to-face.
